Every autumn the valley climbs its ridges for the Night of the Long Fuse: one shell for every name the year took, each casing lettered in lampblack, each colour a way of having been alive.
This year the last shell — the nameless one, the Hush — climbed to the top of its arc and stopped there. Everything else stopped to watch.
You came over the ridge a few seconds late.
